This piece was originally created for musician RY X, using earth gathered from places meaningful to him and to the spirit of the work itself. The painting incorporates Santa Barbara sandstone, Topanga charcoal, Malibu sandstone, and ocean water, embedding the landscape of Southern California directly into the surface of the piece.
RY X’s music carries a rare reverence; for nature, spirit, sound, and the quiet language of the heart. Australian-born and now living in Southern California, his work feels deeply connected to place, presence, and the emotional undercurrents of the natural world. Creating this painting was an intuitive process of translating that atmosphere into form and pigment.
This print marks the first in a series of Jessyjo Darling painting commissions created for musicians whose work inspires and informs my own studio practice — the music I listen to while painting, the sounds that shape the rhythm of my brush and the emotional landscape of my work.
