An archival limited-edition print of an original painting created with charcoal gathered by hand from the fire-marked landscape of Topanga Canyon.
I gathered the charcoal for this piece from Topanga Canyon following the Palisades Fire, alongside sandstone from the Malibu coastline. Back in my studio, these materials were crushed and ground into pigments, then worked directly into the original canvas. Their natural variations created the deep blacks, smoky greys and warm, mineral tones within Topanga 4 - allowing the landscape itself to determine the palette.
Created as part of Pigments of Place: Southern California, the original painting holds a physical record of Topanga; not simply an image inspired by the canyon, but a surface materially formed from it.
This archival giclée edition faithfully reproduces the original painting’s color, gesture and texture. Printed with archival inks on fine-art paper or canvas, it preserves the visual story of the gathered charcoal but does not contain the raw material itself.
Limited edition of 50 across all sizes and materials.
