An archival limited-edition print of the original commissioned painting Santa Barbara 1, created with sandstone gathered from Santa Barbara and Malibu, and charcoal collected from Topanga Canyon following the Palisades Fire.
I crushed and ground the gathered sandstone and charcoal into pigments in my studio, then worked them directly into the original canvas. Their natural variations created the warm mineral tones, smoky blacks and gestural textures within Santa Barbara 1 - allowing the Southern California landscape itself to determine the palette.
Originally created as a private commission and part of Pigments of Place: Southern California, this work brings together materials from Santa Barbara, Malibu and the fire-marked landscape of Topanga. The painting holds a physical record of the region; not simply an image inspired by place, but a surface materially formed from it.
This archival giclée edition faithfully reproduces the original painting’s color, gesture and texture. Printed with archival inks on fine-art paper or canvas, it preserves the visual story of the gathered materials but does not contain the raw pigments themselves.
Limited edition of 50 across all sizes and materials.
Signed, numbered and accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity documenting the materials and their geographic origins.
