Commission for a rammed earth home in Margaret River, WA

03/2023

In March of 2023, I travelled to Margaret River, Western Australia, to work on a commission for a collector who was building a rammed earth home. The project was rooted in the textures and tones of the region, and for me, it carried a deeper layer of meaning. I was born in Margaret River, so returning there wasn’t just a work trip - it was a homecoming. It was a chance to walk familiar ground with new eyes, to connect with the land in a more deliberate and intimate way than I ever had before.

Sense of Place

For this piece, I worked with materials gathered directly from the places that shaped me: limestone and charcoal from Margaret River itself, carrying the memory of its rugged coast and fire-scorched forests, and the deep red earth from the Pilbara, rich with iron and ancient mineral history.

Bringing these elements together on canvas felt like weaving a map of my own story - each pigment a fragment of the land, each stroke an act of reverence for where I come from.
